Week 26: Something that makes you proud

Right now, I'm proud of our Olympic Torch. Our own school Olympic Torch is due to visit around 30 local landmarks before the Olympics begin! 25 pupils were chosen from over 150 applicants who wrote a letter about how they have tried to make a positive difference in their home, community and school.

Setting goals

I recently read James Caan's book, 'Get the Life you Really Want'. There were a few good pieces of advice in there about setting goals, targets and getting where you want to be in life.

"It is your mindset, not your ability, that shapes how high you will go."

Setting goals
"Asking questions and working out what needs changing is great. But then you have to move from thinking about things to actually doing them. To start moving forwards and get some traction, it is important to set targets. Otherwise you go through life like a pinball, being bounced around by other people telling you what to do."
"Try to get the balance right between positive ambitions and what is realistic. You want to feel forward movement, not frustration."
"Make sure there are short gaps between each of your milestones. Then you can see where you are going."
"You don't have to change your life all by yourself. In fact, involving other people and telling them your plans will be life-changing in itself."

Time Management
"Time management is about looking at your diary every morning. Ask yourself whether each task or activity is crucial and critical to what you are doing. Decide what is essential and what is simply 'nice to have'."
"Managing time is all about working out how you can be in control of your time, not the other way around. You are in charge."
"Don't forget to make sure you are building in time to enjoy yourself, time to relax with the kids. It is just as crucial to your well-being. Build it in to your diary and stick to it."

Week 25: A YouTube clip that you find funny

I love Summer Heights high. Mr G is an amazing comic creation!

Week 24: A resource you have used from www.teachingideas.co.uk

I've used lots of French resources from http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/foreignlanguages/contents_french.htm.

Teaching Ideas is a fantastic site for finding ideas to inspire lessons. What I like about them is that the resources are not usually worksheets, they are IDEAS. They add to your lessons, not become the lesson. It's worth a look if you have never used it.

Mark, the site manager, runs various other websites which you can find at http://www.teachingwebsites.co.uk/

Random app idea

Just a quick post to share an idea for a smartphone app. I can't seem to find one that does this in the iPhone store.

I have no skills whatsoever to be able to create the app - if anyone fancies having a go...

It's just a silly idea but one that I think might be fun.

This clip helps to illustrate my idea:

In a nutshell - the app will film a video of people walking towards the screen. The app will then slow it down and play the music from the famous Reservoir Dogs scene, 'Little Green Bag' by The George Baler Selection.

It's hardly going to set the world alight, nor make anyone a fortune. But I'd download it.

Week 23: Your least favourite lesson to teach

My current teaching arrangements see me teach a limited number of lessons (English, Maths, French, ICT, Topic). I love teaching all of these subjects.

Prior to that, when I used to teach all subjects it was Music! As a musician, I guess that I think the noise the children was making was NOT music!

Monthly Review: May 2012

May has been hectic. I guess it hasn't been my most productive month, but there's been a lot to keep me busy.

Working on the SEF
My head and I have been busy writing a new SEF, evaluating the school in its current position. I find writing the SEF a rewarding experience. It means you get to sing the school's praises as well as identifying areas that we could do better in. It's always better to be aware of areas for development before anyone tells you!

Google Apps
I've made a decision that we will move away from our Uniservity learning platform and go to Google Apps for Education. We are using the services of Mark at Ed In The Clouds. I must write about the decision soon.

Bank Holiday
Normally I'm not keen on bank holidays. Everywhere is so busy and, as they usually fall during school holidays, I don't necessarily benefit from them. I love the May Day bank holiday though - this feels like a bonus day! We went into Wales to explore Bangor (not much there) before going to the festival at Rhos-on-Sea in the rain.

Football
Every other year we hold a Euro/World Cup football competition. We have an infant competition first. We had 20 teams of 7 take part which means 140 out of 180 children wanted to give it a go! The final was amazing as the whole school came out to watch and cheer on all of the players. Next it was time for the junior competition to begin with 182 out of 240 taking part! We finished the half-term at the end of the group stage. That's been my lunchtime taken care of for the last month!
